Social Media Maze! Where Do I Start?

What a week!   Lots of travel, met great people at the IDEA Conference, and now, my body is tired but my head is spinning and my brain is full!

Of all the ideas exchanged at the convention, I found myself engaged in more conversations about social media!  Specifically, how to use social media for marketing a personal training or fitness business!  What great timing considering this month’s theme!  So, I thought I’d share some of the main points!

  • Social media should be an essential component of our marketing plan.  You can reach your targeted audience, build relationships, and increase your visibility at NO or low cost.  Did you know there are more than 900 MILLION users on Facebook?  WOW!!
  • Be strategic with your social media plan.  Don’t try to be EVERYWHERE!   Facebook, Linkedin, Twitter, Pinterest, Instagram, and the list goes on!  Identify who you want to reach, find out what social media they use, and customize your message to connect with those people.
  • Blogs are one of the most effective communication tools in internet marketing.   Your blog should be the “home base” for all of your other social media messages.  You can control your blog.  You can customize your messages.  You can demonstrate your expertise and express your personality.  And, as I’m learning, they are a lot of fun to write!

This is a small sampling of the gazillion ideas shared at the conference. Many of which I also learned in our new internet marketing classes.

If you want to enter the world of internet marketing but aren’t sure where to start, I recommend taking our new course, “Use Internet Marketing to Find Personal Training Clients & Build A Business.” This class taught me the basics on internet marketing, how to use social media effectively, AND how to measure the impact my social media efforts are having on the bottom line!  Basically, it taught me to work smart and not hard!

So, what are your tips for social media and internet marketing?  Please share your ideas with us!

I look forward to hearing from you!

  1. I teamed up with Amy at WORLD IDEA to share some aspects of how to increase your bottom line by 30%. In that presentation we touched on some fun factoids that everyone needs to plan on with their business plan.
    1. How many contact leads do you need on the average to get 5 new clients? Anyone… 25! Closing ratios and other factors show this out statistically. Our sales course, which is taught by Fortune 500 trainers, in sales covers the proper methods to succeed.
    2. Do you use Social Media or is it too time consuming? Many people think the latter but many are using some areas in figuring it is better to have some than none. Almost all of this professional group of trainers from the US, Australia, Russia use SM. When I asked how many of them use Hootsuite in that process, I heard crickets. All of these great trainers with their own businesses were clueless. Hootsutie is a FREE calendar to organize your releases of blogs, Facebook postings, twitter etc. Write and organize your material, photos etc over a weekend and then use the calendar to release them throughout the month. Wow what a time saver.

Bottom line is not the likes but the conversions on your site to sales. Lots to learn and share. Get with us on our Fitness Business Institute page and work smart. We already know your passion and your hard work. Make a good living at it too. You deserve it…

  2. I do not use social media marketing for business however how do you keep up with all the different types of social media, i/e facebook, twitter, linkedin, to name a few. Seems like all could be very time consuming. How do you know which one is most effective? Each one has it’s own purpose, how do you choose the one that would be good for your business?

    1. Thanks for the post and great question, Olivia! As with any marketing effort, the BEST approach is the one that reaches your target audience. Many of us think we need to be EVERYWHERE—twitter, facebook, you tube, pinterest, etc. But, depending on your goals and your audience, some may be more effective then others. In our Internet Marketing Fundamentals and Internet Marketing Strategies courses, the instructor provides very specific direction and suggestions on which social media efforts are more suitable for specific goals and audiences. I’d recommend first identifying your marketing goal (what you want to accomplishe i.e. finding new customers or increasing brand recognition, or building relationships with current clients) and then find out where your audience “networks” and, after learning about the different types of social media available, give one a try! Also, there are FREE services like HOOTSUITE that helps schedule, organize and coordinate your social media postings so you can keep up!
