This certification course provides students with current foundational knowledge, training, and competency testing to certify them to practice as group exercise instructors. Lecture and hands-on practical training are combined to teach: exercise physiology, principles of group exercise, anatomy, flexibility, health screening, muscle conditioning, adherence and motivation, strength training and conditioning, safety and injury prevention, exercise for special populations, legal and professional responsibilities. Learning Outcomes: 
After successfully completing this course, students will be able to:

  1. Conduct health-screening assessments.
  2. Apply principles of group cohesion to group exercise.
  3. Incorporate music and sound into a group exercise program.
  4. Correctly cue, perform, monitor and design high and low impact, muscle conditioning, and flexibility exercises in a group setting.
  5. Demonstrate warm up and cool down movements and stretches.

Pre-Requisite:
This is a beginner course for students with little or no experience or education in fitness training.

Methods of Instruction: 
Lecture, practical demonstrations, practical skills assessments, written and final examination.

Completion Requirements: 
Students must earn a score of 70% or higher on the written and practical exams.  Attendance is required and students are only allowed one excused absence. Students with an excused absence must schedule a make-up session and complete any work assigned. Adult CPR is required.

  1. Exercise Physiology, Anatomy
  2. Exercise Analysis and Design, Nutrition and Weight Control
  3. Health Screening, Fitness Testing and Aerobic Programming
  4. Adherence, Motivation, Special Populations, Exercise and Pregnancy
  5. Musculoskeletal Injuries, Legal and Professional Responsibilities
  6. Exam

 

    Practical Skills:
  1. Introduction to Music, Warm ups
  2. Review of Moves, Pre-stretches, Motivational Techniques
  3. Aerobic Cardio Movements, Post Aerobic Cool Downs and Stretches
  4. Floor and Toning Exercises, Flexibility and Final Cool Down Stretches
  5. Review and Practice
  6. Exam


Credits: 
36 contact hours. Approved for 36 WITS CECs and 3.6 IACET and BOC CEUs. Recommended for 1 undergraduate level academic credit by the American Council on Education.

Additional Resources:
Registered students receive discounts on study DVDs and practice exams.  Students who do not pass the course the first time can retake the course and re-test for a reduced fee.
