Advanced Skills For Fitness Professionals II

Learn popular forms of exercise from industry leaders.  Expand and improve your programs, increase your customer base and enhance your skills.  Specific exercise techniques discussed include:  functional flexibility, sport specific training, step aerobics and cardio-boxing.

Learning Outcomes:
After successfully completing this course, students will be able to:

  1. Explain and demonstrate two different stretch variations.
  2. Design a stretching regimen for upper and lower body.
  3. Design two different sport-specific training programs.
  4. Demonstrate three rehabilitative exercises.
  5. Explain and demonstrate posture and body mechanics for stepping.
  6. Apply proper cueing while leading a step routine.
  7. Demonstrate proper form on punches and kicks for cardio-boxing.
  8. Lead a cardio-boxing routine.

Pre-Requisite:
This is an intermediate level course for students with some experience and fitness-related education.

Methods of Instruction: 
Lecture, group discussion, demonstration, hands-on practice and final examination.

Completion Requirements: 
Students must earn a score of 70% or higher on the exam.  Attendance is required and students are only allowed one excused absence. Students with an excused absence must schedule a make-up session and complete any work assigned.
 
Course Outline:

  1. Functional flexibility, stretching for general clients and athletes, stretching regiments for upper and lower body regions, static and PNF stretches for each major muscle group
  2. Functional training, understanding functional fitness, stability balls, free weights and weight bearing machines for improved functional fitness, single and multi joint exercises.
  3. Step up to step, correct posture and body mechanics specific to stepping, essential safety guidelines, linking combinations together, cueing methods. Cardio Boxing, proper punching form and footwork, stretches for cardio-boxing 

Credits: 
15 contact hours. Approved for 15 WITS CECs and 1.5 IACET and BOC CEUs. Recommended for 1 undergraduate academic credit by the American Council on Education.

Additional Resources:
Registered students receive discounts on study DVDs and practice exams.  Students who do not pass the course the first time can retake the course and re-test for a reduced fee.
